Comic book creators visit area

Usually Prime After Dark features events that occur on a somewhat regular basis — open mic nights, trivia nights, and free summer concerts are some of our recent subjects.
This issue we’re recommending a series of one-time events, The Kenosha Festival of Cartooning. Some big names in comic strips will make presentations at the Kenosha Public Museum, Carthage College and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Sept. 14-16.
It’s a chance to meet some of the people who create comic strips and editorial cartoons, not the sort of thing Prime readers should overlook. Who doesn’t like comic strips and editorial cartoons?
Among the scheduled events that are free and open to the public are:
--
At 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, several cartoonists will be featured in a panel discussion on working in syndication, followed by a question and answer session, at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Participants will include Scott Stantis, creator of the comic strip “Prickly City” and the staff editorial cartoonist for the Chicago Tribune; Sandra Bell-Lundy, creator of “Between Friends;” Paul Gilligan, creator of “Pooch Cafe;” and John Hambrock, a Kenosha resident who is the creator of the comic strip “The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee.”
-- Immediately following the panel discussion there will be a meet-and-greet reception for guest artists.
-- At 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kenosha Public Museum, Gilligan will give a presentation, “Behind the Scenes of ‘Pooch Cafe,’ ” and at 7:50 p.m. Hambrock will present “Behind the Scenes of ‘Edison Lee.’ ”
--l The opening reception of an exhibit called “One Fine Sunday in the Funny Pages” will be from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the H.F. Johnson Gallery of Art at Carthage College. The exhibit, put together by John Read, publisher of Stay Tooned magazine, features original artwork from more than 130 nationally syndicated comic strips. The exhibit will run at the H.F. Johnson Gallery through Nov. 5.
At the reception, the visiting artists will be sketching and signing autographs.
In addition to the creators of “Pooch Cafe,” “Prickly City,” “Between Friends” and “The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee,” visiting artists at the Kenosha Festival of Cartooning will include Tom Richmond, an artist and illustrator for MAD magazine, and Tom Bancroft, a former animator for Disney.
-- At 1 p.m. Friday, all the visiting artists will participate in a panel discussion at the Carthage Student Center Autitorium. The topic is “Marketing Yourself as an Artist in the Digital Age.”
-- At 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Carthage Student Center Auditorium, Sandra Bell Lundy will discuss her 20-year career in cartooning with special emphasis on the woman’s voice on the comics page and the challenges of working in a male-dominated field.
-- At 4 p.m. Friday at Carthage, there will be a presentation on the role of the editorial cartoonist by Scott Stantis with a special emphasis on the relationship of a free press to the U.S. Constitution.
-- At 7 p.m. Friday at the Kenosha Public Museum the festival will conclude with a presentation by Tom Richmond titled “Cartooning for the Troops.” Richmond has traveled with the USO, visiting soldiers in Germany, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Iraq.
