Restaurants
Irish oatmeal and more

Our favorite restaurant is Country Rose Bakery & Cafe at 19319 Washington Ave. (Highway 20) in the town of Yorkville.
We are so predictable that the waitress pours two steaming cups of the “flavor of the day” coffee and the cook starts preparing Irish oatmeal as soon as we walk in the door. Hidden inside the oatmeal is a layer of brandied raisins and the topping is a generous heaping of thawed berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries). Even if you don’t think you like oatmeal, you will soon be a fan.
Another unusual breakfast entree is the Denver Melt sandwich. Between the crispy slices of bread are scrambled eggs, onions and green peppers, a thick slice of ham and melted pepper jack cheese. We like to split the sandwich and each order a side of either baked apples or delicious cheesy hash browns or fresh fruit (in season).
Country Rose is also open for lunch, Monday through Saturday. There are two soups of the day and a choice of four or five unusual sandwiches or wraps of the day. Tuna salad and chicken salad sandwiches are always available, as is a Caesar salad and a vegetarian wrap. You may order any half-sandwich and soup combination.
This has been a rough summer for Rose and Rita — sisters, who are owners of Country Rose. The restaurant is located at the intersection of Highway 20 & Highway 45 (east) and the highways were closed to through traffic from late June to early September while the state built a roundabout at the intersection. There was a group of determined regulars who made it through the construction almost every day, but business was down.
Now is the perfect time to take a drive in the country for breakfast or lunch, to pick up a dozen doughnuts to treat everyone at work, or to order a beautifully decorated cake for a wedding or other special occasion. It is a cozy place to meet friends and enjoy the seasonal decorations on the fireplace mantel in the dining room. We like it so much that we frequently give gift certificates to Country Rose so others can enjoy it, too.
The restaurant is open from 6 a.m to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday.
